This is a raw and real story. After reading this it gave me such a better understanding of his novels. His openness to life and his personal struggles is inspiring. We need more authenticity in this world and that is exactly what this book is. Well done.

Matt Haig captures the world living in all of this. Simply beautiful, honest, and something we all can relate to. Thank you Matt, for being real.

  • Brutally Honest, Realistic View of Depression (with a large side of hope)

I love Matt Haig. This is my first of his, but will certainly not be my last. In this sort of autobiographical approach to offering hope for depressives, Haig shares a refreshing viewpoint direct from the source. The advice and tips woven into this retelling are wonderful; my book is scattered with a plethora of worthy highlights. Down to earth, honest, inspiring perspective helped me to find hope in acceptance and autonomy for my choices along the way. Give this one a read!

I don’t want to be mean and am sure the author is a lovely person. The book was just so boring and repetitive, though. There doesn’t seem to be anything new here that hasn’t been said many times before. I do not think it provides any useful insight into the experience of depression nor any inspirational commentary. (Maybe it does at the very end, but I just couldn’t make myself stick with it.)

Having depression myself, I know the daily struggles of expressing to loved ones what you’re actually going through. This book, throughout the entire thing, I was thinking, “that’s me!” or “he hit the nail on the head!” or “how did he know that’s what I’m thinking?” Depression makes your mind feel like a dark, infinite hole, but with a bunch of thoughts swirling 100mph that your mouth can’t make sense of. This book helps put those thoughts into words. This is a great book for anyone dealing with depression or anxiety, and an even better book for friends, family, and loved ones of someone they are concerned about and wanting to understand better. I’ve recommended this book to several friends. Buy it!! Keep it!! Highlight in it!! Reference back to it!! You won’t regret it!!

This book came highly recommended by a fellow anxiety sufferer. I appreciate the courage and fortitude it took to put these words on paper for the world to see. Honestly, it fell short of what I was expecting. This is a story of a man suffering...who has a life long partner to carry him through and take care of him. How about those who are truly alone? This doesn't speak at all to that population.
