Description

#1 New York Times bestselling author Peter Straub’s classic tale of horror, secrets, and the dangerous ghosts of the past...

What was the worst thing you’ve ever done?

In the sleepy town of Milburn, New York, four old men gather to tell each other stories—some true, some made-up, all of them frightening. A simple pastime to divert themselves from their quiet lives.

But one story is coming back to haunt them and their small town. A tale of something they did long ago. A wicked mistake. A horrifying accident. And they are about to learn that no one can bury the past forever...

What an incredible and intricate book! The characters are so well developed, the plot carries you along; sometimes slowly, sometimes at breakneck speed. You have to read this!

This was the ramblings of a drunk lunatic. Don’t waste your time, just go talk to an insane person for a couple hours instead.

Well written book that does a great job with creepy imagery. I wish the ending was a little different but I appreciated the journey. The characters were well written and aside from some of their actions not always making sense. Off to watch the 1981 movie based on the book. Wish me luck !

It has been so long since I lost myself in a book.

I’m not sure I’ve ever had a horror story scare me less. Most of the way through, I had no clue what the monsters were supposed to be. The eventual explanation didn’t move me at all. Maybe this book is evidence that, like rock and roll, horror fiction is out of gas.

A great book with twists you never see coming. It’s so exciting that if possible you could devour it in one sitting. I had to take breaks because it’s so very intense my brain needed rest or it would have overloaded. I worried about the characters when away from the read and to me that is the only sign of a great book. I’m sorry I came to the end because I would like it to go on and on. I’ll think of this story often and fondly as one of my favorite books of the thousands of books I have read in my lifetime.
