The instant New York Times bestseller!

"Utterly unique and absolutely riveting—I couldn't put it down! What a marvelously cool world."—New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas

From the author of the New York Times bestselling White Rabbit Chronicles series comes the first book of a series in which life as we know it is merely a dress rehearsal, and real life begins after death.

Tenley "Ten" Lockwood is an average seventeen-year-old girl…who has spent the past thirteen months locked inside the Prynne Asylum. The reason? Not her obsession with numbers, but her refusal to let her parents choose where she'll live—after she dies.

There is an eternal truth most of the world has come to accept: Firstlife is merely a dress rehearsal, and real life begins after death.

In the Everlife, two realms are in power: Troika and Myriad, longtime enemies and deadly rivals. Both will do anything to recruit Ten, including sending their top Laborers to lure her to their side. Soon, Ten finds herself on the run, caught in a wild tug-of-war between the two realms who will do anything to win the right to her soul. Who can she trust? And what if the realm she's drawn to isn't where the boy she's falling for lives? She just has to stay alive long enough to make a decision…

I can't say enough great things about this book. What I love is it's different than anything I've read. It seems these days everybody is trying to be the next Harry Potter franchise or as big as the Hunger Games, but this is so unique and different that it's fantastic. I couldn't put it down! I look forward to more and more books following this story line and hey, if this series gets picked up and turned into a franchise you better bet I'll be there first in line to watch the movies or tv series, however it works out.
  • SPOILERS! Interesting...but...

I have finished this book and I have to say I was pretty unimpressed. The overall concept was incredibly interesting. The idea that life doesn't end when you die but rather is simply a preparation for your second life isn't exactly new (see: religion) but the idea that there are two different "everlife" you can choose between was the particularly interesting bit. I personally found, however, that it was hardly touched on. You don't get a full understanding of what each "everlife" is like and so it's hard to root for Ten to make her decision. The point of view, in my opinion, seemed like a wrong choice. I think that if the story was told in alternating first person, the story would have been more fulfilling, or if it had been told in 3rd person omniscient, that way the readers receive a more unbiased view (because the story was incredibly biased toward Troika). I also found the characters to be quite underdeveloped. The main character would flip-flop from being independent and not needing anyone, to being wishy washy. She also didn't really seem to resemble a teen who was abandoned by her parents and then tortured by them. She seemed...normal. I found Killian to be absolutely useless except to be a love interest for Ten and the same goes to Archer (although I kind of liked him because at least he was slightly more developed). The story itself would. not. end. It kind of just kept going and was really choppy (kind of like this review amiright?). Something would happen and then two pages later, something else would happen, and then two pages later something else would happen, and then something else and so on. Lastly, I feel as though this concept could have been a great way to explore the theme of death (coming of age, coping with death, learning to accept death, etc.) and it was just...flat. There didn't seem to be much too it. The only thing I can really see being remotely a theme is the weight of decisions one makes: not just Ten's decision on who to join in "everlife" but other decisions such as Archer choosing to fight Killian instead of saving someone's life. Overall, it seemed mostly just Ten battling in her mind which side to sign with and how much Killian turned her on. However, the cover was gorgeous and it end sin a cliff hanger so yeah, I'll be buying and reading the sequel so my book shelf doesn't look wonky.

I really liked the premise of this book, the idea behind it but I almost stopped reading it in the beginning bc the dialogue was kinda cheesy and I found some of it a little annoying. That paired with the immaturity of some of the characters at the time. However I was on a train and had nothing else to read so I continued. It gets better as it goes on, not so much cheesy dialogue and a little bit less of the "number thing" where the main character associated numbers with everything. Cute idea, little overdone. The characters do get better and the dialogue becomes more normal and less Jr. High. Hopefully the second book will continue at the level of writing the first book stopped with (and maybe improve) and not what it started with.

Only reason it is not a five star is because I kind of wanted Tenly's number obsession to amount to something.
