Description

Anne Rivers Siddons's New York Times bestselling novel about four friends whose lives are forever changed by the events of one summer.

For fifteen years, four "girls of August" would gather together to spend a week at the beach, until tragedy interrupts their ritual. Now they reunite for a startling week of discoveries.

The ritual began when they were in their twenties and their husbands were in medical school, and became a mainstay of every summer thereafter. Their only criteria was oceanfront and isolation, their only desire to strengthen their far-flung friendships. They called themselves the Girls of August. But when one of the Girls dies tragically, the group slowly drifts apart and their vacations together are brought to a halt.

Years later, a new marriage reunites them and they decide to come together once again on a remote barrier island off the South Carolina coast. There, far from civilization, the women uncover secrets that will change them in ways they never expected.

well, just when I think I have found other authors to replace ARS, then I read this book and she’s right back up on the top of my favorite chic lit list. I love southern women relationship stories and ARS is the queen. Altho this book had a most predictable uniting at the end, I felt the story ended too soon, I wanted to finish out the relationships after returning home. I have to keep a checklist of ARS books because I have read nearly all of them but I think there are a couple yet I am saving for emergencies.

This is the first time I have reviewed a book even though I am an avid reader. I have read every book by Anita SHREVE and pre-ordered this book without looking at reviews. I am so sorry I wasted my money. I didn't like any of these characters and some of the story lines were so predictable it was boring. The ending was abrupt and anti-climatic. If you love Anita SHREVE don't waste your time or money, this book will disappoint you.

Really enjoyed this book. Easy read while I am on vacation however the depth of the back story and the personalities of each character was excellent. Would love to read a follow-up to this!! :)

It was well written, but I would have liked to have had some closure. There were three life challenges presented in the story, but you never found out what happened. I don't like to be left hanging.

THIS is a book that you bring to the beach just after breakfast and read it straight through before you pack up and head home late in the afternoon! And how appropriate...it's August 1st! It wasn't what I expected at all. It was better! Enjoy!

Way, way,way too short. I really loved it as I usually love her books, but it was just over too soon. Her four characters could have given much more and the ending was so abrupt. Caught me off guard!

Was this even written by Siddons? Abrupt ending, flat characters, predictable plot, no story development.

Characters were well written so you really want to know more about them. But the plot was so shallow and weak that when I got to the end, I was very disappointed.

Disappointing. I have always loved Anne River Siddons, but this book had no depth, and no real plot. It was too short, and I found the ending to be truly disappointing.

I really loved this book, but the end was disappointing. I was not ready to say goodbye to these characters and felt that they had more to say. Not knowing what happened when they got back is frustrating and going to drive me nuts... Sequel please!
