Nanette confesses to paying Field to keep him quiet. She was trying to protect the reputation of the man. The story goes even deeper as she discovers she is white and not Indian. The writing is very good and the character development smooth and easy to follow. It is a story of intrigue from a exciting period in the wild wild west. It is a classic and fun story of the relationships that intertwined with an undeclared war between two groups and based on race.
