Chapter Summary
During the summer, the tides at Janus Rock peaks at its highest. The fog from rainstorms and smoke from bushfires become thickest, and that’s when the lighthouse has to maximize its use of brightness. As a pensive man, Tom always reflects on his life in the lighthouse. The silence brings up memories of the brutal war as well as feelings of emancipation. With this, his heart stirs for the memory of Isabel and her proposal. He is ready to leave the burdens of his past behind to start a married life with her.
He writes a letter to her of his experience in the lighthouse, of the beauty of the celestial bodies that form constellations that turn like a clock at night, and of offering himself as a good husband to her if she still hasn’t changed her mind. He makes her a gift of a jewelry box. To this she replies jovially...

Editor’s Notes:
In this chapter, Tom reflects on his past – the war he fought. His pain has been eased by the memory of Isabel’s proposal to marry her and bring her to Janus rock with him. He writes her a letter about his experience and presents her a gift. She responds by sending him a portrait of her. Tom responds back to Isabel that he will be a good husband to her if she hasn’t changed her mind yet in wanting to really marry him. His 6 months post go by so fast and he soon travels back to Partaguese.
