Red Cloud was born in Nebraska to a couple called Lone Man and Walks As She Thinks, a Brule and an Oglala respectively. When Lone Man succumbed to alcoholism and died, his mother took Red Cloud back to her band and put him under the protection of his uncle, her brother, who was also the chief of the band. Old Smoke treated his nephew with love and affection and taught him all that he needed to learn. However, Red Cloud still had to prove himself. In a patriarchal society, being fatherless meant missing out on some easy opportunities to advance himself. He fell in love with two women. However, it ended in tragedy since the woman he loved, Pine Leaf, was not aware that he wanted to take her as his wife. He had opted to marry the richer and more suitable woman, Pretty Owl, first in order to increase his status. Since his tribe allowed him to take multiple wives, he wanted to marry Pine Leaf as well. However, on his wedding night, Pine Leaf committed suicide...

Editor’s Notes:
In this chapter, we learn about the Sioux way of life. The tribe had no artistic tendencies, nor did they learn farming or animal husbandry. Their only way of survival was to hunt and failing that, rob from the other tribes, for which reason war became the primary pastime for the men. A patriarchal society where the tribal line passed down from father to son, the Sioux Nation included several tribes, jointly referred to as People of the Seven Council Fires.
The Sioux had spread terror and mayhem among the Native Americans over decades, but the balance of power changed when the other tribes acquired modern weaponry from Spanish merchants and drove them further southwest into the Prairies. The hardy environment of the Prairies proved conducive to the Sioux way of life and soon enough, they were hunting buffaloes and used the hides to make different items, which they sold to the merchants. Their ultimate ambition of controlling the entire Black Hills area, however, remained unchanged...
